Resistor Lead Forming Tool E-mail
lead forming tool
using lead forming tool bending results

Yes, it's a little gizmo that can help you bend the leads of your resistors just so. We use these whenever building up any of our larger kits. Here's what we had to say about these in a writeup about obscure electronics tools:

"Okay, you can bend your resistor leads by hand. We know. We all do it. But, resistor benders are fabulous for getting the leads bent squarely enough to go easily through the holes in your PCB or perf board. Silly? No, because it helps keep your board looking neat, and keeps the resistors from sticking too far above the board. If you are populating a circuit board with a lot of resistors, this tool can actually save you a lot of time. How? By making sure that your resistors are bent to exactly the correct length, so that they go through the hole on the first try, without any fuss. This is one of those tools that we never thought we needed until we got one."

20-pin ZIF sockets E-mail
ZIF Socket ZIF Socket

20-pin ZIF sockets by 3M.

These Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) sockets clamp onto a chip, making a good electrical connection, when you push the lever down. When you release the lever, it releases the chip. This allows you to repeatedly insert or remove a chip from the socket without damage to either.

These are great for two situations: When you want to replace the chip that goes in a given place frequently, or when you want to program one chip after another in the same fixture.

We sell these because they are perfect for programming microcontrollers in DIP packages with up to 20 pins, including 8-pin, 16-pin, 18-pin, and 20-pin devices. There's even a little bar to indicate where to put a DIP-8, if you are using those with this socket.

We use these (amongst other places) for programming the ATtiny2313 chips that go in our open source menorah and micro-readerboard kits.

17-Segment LED Displays, Ultra Red E-mail
Bare Black Board 17-segment alphanumeric display with 0.8" digit height in ultrabright red.

These are the same super-efficient displays that are used in version 2.0 of our open-source LED micro-readerboard project, now available for sale ala carte. Seriously bright at full current, so you can turn them way the heck down to run a very low-power display. In moving from a "standard" brightness display to one of these, we were able to take the battery life from a number of hours to a number of months. (No kidding.)
